Mangaluru:  Hours after a youth named Deepak Rao was hacked to death at Katipalla on Wednesday,   a man identified as Basheer who was returning home at night after closing down his shop in Kottara Chowki  was brutally attacked by unknown assailants. Basheer  who is still undergoing treatment at the hospital is said to be in a critical condition.

But, if not for two good Samaritans, both ambulance drivers,  Basheer would have remained struggling for long in that cold winter night. The two ambulance drivers are Shekhar and Rohith.

When Vartha Bharathi contacted Shekhar  this was what  he had to say – " Myself and Rohith were supposed to  take a different route  that day. But probably for Basheer's good luck we had opted to travel via Kottara Chowki  that day. Far off we saw that an acquaintance of ours had  stopped his vehicle. I went to him  to enquire why he was standing there.  He had spotted Basheer lying on the road and suspected this to be a case of accident. We thought we would leave  that man  in the same state if he was drunk. But when  we went close by we saw him in a pool of blood with injuries all over. We immediately shifted him to our ambulance  and rushed to the hospital.  He had suffered much blood loss.  Doctors told that his  life would have been in danger had we brought him even a little late."

"Basheer resides near our house.  Initially we did not recognise him that night. We hope he recovers soon.  During such situations humanitarian gestures always come first. We have the satisfaction of saving a life. Even Basheer's family has thanked us.  I  have enquired about his health even this morning," said Shekhar.

During these difficult times, when there are reports of hatred and vengeance on caste and community lines, Shekhar and  Rohith have proved that humanity is the biggest religion. They are the true symbols of harmony.
